POLISH ACTRESS/PUPPETEER ANNA SKUBIK AND BULGARIAN/AMERICAN PARTNER ANTHONY NIKOLCHEV STAR IN THE AMERICAN PREMIERE OF A UNIQUE COMEDY/DRAMA AT THE ODYSSEY THEATRE ENSEMBLE IN ASSOCIATION
WITH THE ADAM MICKIEWICZ INSTITUTE OPENING FEBRUARY 13 & 14, 2010.

DUAL CITIZENS – A hit of the 2009 Polish International Theatre Festival. Polish actress/puppeteer Anna Skubik takes on a life-sized Marlene Dietrich puppet, as both are caught in a codependent relationship during the star’s dying days. Meanwhile her Bulgarian/American partner Anthony Nikholchev confronts his family’s breathtaking 1960’s escape from Communist Bulgaria.

ANNA SKUBIK (Concept, performer) graduated from the National Academy of Theatre and puppetry in Wroclaw, Poland. “Broken Nails: Marlene Dietrich Dialogue” premiered in Torun, has toured throughout Europe, receiving the Grand Prix of the OFTA Solo Performance Festival in Warclaw, Poland (2008), the Most Innovative Puppeteer award at the International Puppet Festival in Prague (2009) and performs the play in Greek, Spanish, Polish and English.

ANTHONY NIKOLCHEV (Writer, performer) is the son of a Bulgarian-born father and grew up in California’s bay area and graduated from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT. He performed his original solo performance “Look, What I Don’t Understand” in the 2009 SOLO International Theatre Festival in Moscow and the 2009 ArmMONO International Festival in Armenia. In May 2009, he traveled to Poland where he performed in PERFORMANCE: Laboratorium Alternatyw.”

Tomasz Kizny will present his documentary photo project
that gives faces and voices to the victims of The Great
Terror in the USSR (1936-38). First shown are historic
prison portraits of the victims with biographical notes
accompanied by excerpts from diaries and private
documents. Next, Kizny presents his recent photographs of
the Soviet killing fields and the heirs of the victims in
Russia to reveal the immense topography of terror and to
bear witness to the atrocities of the past remaining in the
present. Tomasz Kizny is a Polish photojournalist who was
a founding member of the clandestine association Dementi
and author of Gulag: Life and Death inside Soviet
Concentration Camps (2004).

This lecture is part of the “Thinking through Media” lecture series organized by the Department of
the History of Art and Architecture, UCSB, and is co-sponsored by the departments of Comparative
Literature, Germanic Slavic & Semitic Studies, History, Political Science and the Interdisciplinary
Humanities Center. The Tomasz Kizny’s project is funded by grants Bundesstiftung zur Aufarbeitun der
SED-Diktatur and Gerda Henkel Stiftung with support of Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin.
